A recent segment from ABC Radio Darwin titled “Is There Such a Thing as Too Many Laksas? Apparently Not!” perfectly captured Darwin’s average speech rate of 182 words per minute. New South Wales secured the second spot with an impressive speaking average of 172 words per minute. Curiously, this achievement isn’t attributed to Sydney, where residents average just 167 words per minute. Instead, it’s the cities of Wagga Wagga (174 wpm) and Tamworth (172 wpm) that propelled the state’s ranking. Maybe the fast-paced lifestyle in Sydney leaves its residents a bit exhausted?

The Northern Territory secured a commendable third place, boasting an average speaking rate of 167 words per minute. This achievement can largely be credited to Darwin, as its vibrant communication style significantly boosted the Territory’s ranking. In contrast, Alice Springs, situated 1,500 kilometers south of Darwin, lags behind with a speaking rate of just 153 words per minute.

Interestingly, all these broadcasts exhibited speech rates below the national average of 161 words per minute. This slower pace of communication aligns with Cairns’ reputation as a ‘relaxed, tropical city,’ reflecting the tranquil vibe that characterizes the lifestyle of its residents.

In Alice Springs, speakers clock in at an average of 153 words per minute, making it the second slowest talking city in Australia. The locals’ tendency to call it simply ‘Alice’ reflects their straightforward communication style. Our insights into this unique region were drawn from an analysis of various radio programs from ABC Alice Springs, including a captivating afternoon segment titled “Why Your Dog Hates the Postie.” (Spoiler alert: it turns out that the jarring noise of the postie’s motorbike is what really gets these dogs worked up!)

Ballarat has earned the title of Australia’s third slowest-talking city, with residents averaging 154 words per minute.
