Politeness is all about demonstrating good manners and respect for others. While many see it as a behavior, it also extends to how we communicate. It’s often simple to be courteous to friends and family, but genuine politeness shines through when we extend that same kindness to strangers.

To uncover which states boast the most courteous Americans, we conducted a nationwide survey, gathering responses from every state. We assigned points for answers reflecting polite behavior and calculated overall scores for each state based on the residents’ feedback.

Our research confirms that Southern hospitality is very real, with several Southern states shining in our rankings. Arkansas takes the lead as the state with the most courteous residents, boasting an impressive score of 99.3 out of 100. Remarkably, nearly 75% of Arkansans believe that holding the door for others is an important gesture of politeness.

Georgia takes the runner-up spot, where the warmth of its people rivals the sweetness of its famous peaches. A commendable 62% of Georgians believe it’s crucial to honor individuals’ preferred titles and pronouns, significantly boosting the state’s impressive score of 98.9 in inclusivity.

Claiming the third spot on our list is Alabama, boasting an impressive score of 98.6 out of 100. A remarkable 90% of residents believe that offering their seat on public transportation to those in need is essential. Moreover, even in the face of rudeness from others, 56% of Alabamians pride themselves on maintaining their courteous behavior.

A notable 72% of Americans believe that cleaning up after oneself in public spaces is crucial, and half of the population consistently expresses gratitude and politeness by saying “please” and “thank you.”

In contrast, some states place a lower emphasis on politeness. Topping the list as the least polite state is Nevada, which scored 90.7. A striking 33% of residents admit to displaying impatience while waiting in line, often resorting to foot-tapping, sighing, or vocal complaints.

New Jersey and New York rank closely behind in terms of politeness, with scores of 90.8 and 91.0, respectively, making them the second and third least polite states.

Language expert Sylvia Johnson emphasizes that politeness varies significantly across cultures, noting that what is considered polite in one region may not hold the same meaning elsewhere.

She highlights that this provides an intriguing insight into the diverse cultures worldwide. Johnson emphasizes the importance of politeness while traveling, stating that it not only honors local traditions but also fosters authentic connections. A kind gesture or courteous word, no matter the language, can leave a lasting, positive impression.

The states where residents think they are most and least polite

Although we strive to be courteous in public, not everyone feels their neighbors are doing enough to foster a polite atmosphere. To gauge perceptions of kindness across different states, we asked participants to evaluate the politeness of their state on a rating scale.

Minnesota tops the charts for perceived politeness, with its residents proudly considering their state one of the most courteous in the nation. Although it didn’t make the overall top 10 for politeness, an impressive 42% of Minnesotans report giving compliments at least once a week, showcasing their commitment to kindness.

Coming in next is Arkansas, where residents pride themselves on their politeness and believe that the entire state embodies good manners.

Nebraska ranks third in perceived politeness, boasting an impressive score of 89.5 out of 100. While the state may not hold a top position overall, coming in 18th for general politeness, locals believe that their neighbors are exceptionally kind and friendly.

Methodology

In this study, we conducted a state-by-state survey to uncover which Americans are the most polite. We posed a range of questions to assess how much value respondents place on various polite behaviors, such as holding the door for others and offering their seat to those in need.

We explored how often respondents engage in polite actions, such as giving compliments and using “please” and “thank you.” To quantify this, we assigned points for the most courteous behaviors and calculated the average scores for each state.

We then converted these scores to a scale of 0 to 100, where 100 signifies the highest level of politeness. Afterward, we ranked the states to identify which ones boast the most courteous residents in America.
