When it comes to nicknames, the possibilities are limitless! There are no strict rules governing what you can choose. Typically, people opt for affectionate names or ones that evoke a fond memory related to the person.

At LingualNeeds, we set out to explore the unique ways various languages convey affection through nicknames. To uncover the most beloved endearing terms worldwide, we conducted a survey involving speakers of 14 languages: Arabic, Chinese, Dutch, English, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Polish, Portuguese, Spanish, and Ukrainian.

The most popular affectionate nicknames in each language

Our exploration revealed that affectionate nicknames are a common thread across languages. Globally, the five most popular terms of endearment are Babe, Love, Baby, Honey, and Dear.

In our exploration of nicknames across various languages, we discovered intriguing similarities in both their forms and underlying themes. Notably, “Baby” or “Babe” emerged as the most popular nickname in five out of the fourteen languages we examined.

We found that many languages share a charming trend of using animal names as terms of endearment for partners. Common examples include Kitten, Mouse, Bear, Ladybug, Bunny, Cat, and Puppy, all of which convey affection in a playful way.

Least liked affectionate nicknames 

While nicknames in relationships often stem from affection and tenderness, they don’t always convey the intended warmth. Our survey gathered insights from participants who shared the affectionate nicknames they find least appealing.

Using animal names as terms of endearment is a widespread practice, as shown by the popular nicknames mentioned earlier. However, not every animal name resonates positively with everyone. Our survey found that many respondents had at least one animal name they disliked as a nickname. Interestingly, among Polish speakers, all the least favored affectionate names were indeed animal-related.

Names can have vastly different receptions across languages and cultures. For instance, the name “Darling” enjoys popularity in Dutch, Spanish, and Japanese-speaking communities, while it ranks among the least favored names in German, Portuguese, and Hebrew. This highlights how cultural perceptions can shape the appeal of a name.

In the intimate realm of personal devices, just 31% of individuals choose to save their partner’s name with a sweet nickname on their phone, leaving a notable 69% opting for a more straightforward approach.

Methodology

Between January 25 and January 27, 2023, we conducted a survey with 1,966 participants to explore their views on affectionate names and identify the most popular ones in various languages. The survey was available in 14 languages, including Arabic, Chinese, Dutch, English, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Polish, Portuguese, Spanish, and Ukrainian. Our respondents, aged 18 to 76, comprised 49% female, 49% male, and 2% nonbinary individuals.
