Money was the most frequently chosen topic, with 32% of respondents admitting to steering clear of financial discussions.

Politics is often regarded as a tough topic to broach, much like money, with 26% of respondents opting to avoid it in initial conversations. This is not surprising, as political discussions can be divisive and evoke strong emotions—definitely not the ideal scenario for making a positive first impression.

Over half of Hong Kongers are in serious relationships thanks to dating apps

In a surprising revelation, 66% of Hongkongers surveyed reported finding serious, long-term relationships through dating apps. This statistic challenges the widespread belief that these platforms are only for casual hookups or fleeting romances.

Interestingly, a notable generational divide emerged in the pursuit of long-term relationships. Generation X led the pack with an impressive success rate of 85%, while Generation Z closely followed with 78%. This highlights distinct patterns in relationship-building across different age groups.

A study from the School of Journalism and Communication at CUHK reveals that younger generations, having grown up with various communication apps, view dating apps as simpler and more accessible. Other effective conversation starters include compliments (23%), humorous questions (23%), thought-provoking inquiries (22%), and comments that highlight shared interests (20%). Adding another layer of complexity, expectations for in-person meetings vary significantly. Most people, around 4 to 6 days, typically feel ready to meet face-to-face. However, there’s a notable difference between genders: 15% of women are open to waiting 3 to 4 weeks, while only 11% of men share that sentiment.

For instance, just as 97% of Americans value a comprehensive profile on dating apps, 88% of people in Hong Kong share this preference. In the United States, Gen-Z views religion as a significant red flag, but in Hong Kong, other pressing issues take precedence. Conversations about money and politics are best saved for later. Instead, a thoughtfully crafted profile paired with timely and sincere messages can foster genuine interactions. It’s important to keep introductions simple and authentic while respecting local customs and etiquette. Methodology

Between February 26 and March 5, 2024, we conducted an insightful study surveying 1,001 residents of Hong Kong, representing a diverse mix of ages and genders. The results revealed that 64% of participants identified as men, while women made up approximately 36%. Additionally, two individuals identified as non-binary, highlighting the varied spectrum of gender identities within the community.

In our analysis of age demographics, young adults emerged as the predominant group, with individuals aged 25 to 34 constituting nearly half of our sample at 49%. Following them, 20% were aged 18 to 24, while those between 35 and 44 represented 25%. A smaller segment included participants aged 45 to 54, accounting for 6%, alongside two individuals over the age of 55.
