As language learning experts, we recognize the hurdles that come with mastering pronunciation and quick dictation, which led us to explore the world of fast rappers. We set out to identify the artists who can spit syllables at lightning speed. However, a playful reminder: these rapid-fire rappers may not be ideal for beginners in English, as their intricate lyrics can be quite daunting. On the flip side, for advanced learners seeking a fun and engaging challenge, tackling these speedy verses can be an exciting way to enhance comprehension skills.

Many rappers claim the title of ‘quickest’

If you ask a group of people who they believe is the fastest rapper of all time, you’re bound to get a variety of responses. This is due to the fact that different artists have claimed this prestigious title at various times, depending on the criteria used to measure their speed and skill.

Eminem made headlines in 2020 when he earned a Guinness World Record for his incredible speed, rapping an astonishing 7.5 words per second in the verse of “Godzilla.” Additionally, his 2013 hit “Rap God” set a record for the most words in a single track, featuring a remarkable 1,560 words in just 6 minutes and 4 seconds.

Twista, the trailblazer of the chopper rap style, made history in 1992 when he set a Guinness World Record by rapping an astonishing 598 syllables in just 58 seconds. His rapid-fire delivery didn’t stop there; throughout the 90s, he continued to push the limits of speed in tracks like “Victory or Death,” released in 1999, where he achieved an impressive rate of 12.8 syllables per second.

Many rappers have achieved impressive speeds similar to Twista’s, including Spanish MC El Chojin. In 2008, he set a remarkable record by rapping 921 syllables in just one minute, earning recognition from the Guinness World Records as the fastest rapper at that time. This milestone marked the last official measurement of such records before they were discontinued.

Motivated by the impressive displays of rapid-fire wordplay, we set out to examine the speed of rappers from various languages and regions worldwide. Our goal is to identify who can truly claim the title of the fastest rapper throughout an entire commercially released song, rather than just focusing on individual verses.

Which English-speaking rapper is the quickest across the full length of their tracks?

We’ve just witnessed some impressive displays of rapid wordplay from record-holding rappers in specific verses. But what happens when we examine their speed throughout entire songs? To explore this, we analyzed the number of syllables per song for each artist, rather than counting whole words.

Californian rapper Ab-Soul is recognized as the fastest rapper in the English language, based on the average syllable count in his songs. His impressive lyrical speed sets him apart in the hip-hop scene.

In our analysis of Ab-Soul’s commercially released tracks, we found that he raps at an impressive pace of 8.31 syllables per second. This speed is more than double that of the average English-language rapper in our study, who clocks in at just 4.13 syllables per second.

Chance the Rapper takes the runner-up spot with an impressive average of 7.8 syllables per second, while the iconic 2Pac follows closely in third with 7.53 syllables per second. Eminem, known for his lightning-fast delivery and holder of a Guinness World Record for his rapid 30-second flow in the track “Godzilla,” ranks seventh on our list with an average of 6.75 syllables per second.

What is the fastest commercially released rap or grime song, based on the number of syllables?

Assessing the speed of rap songs on a broad scale can be challenging, but to ensure a fair and consistent comparison, we concentrated on specific parameters to enhance the comparability of our song sample.

• The song must be commercially released and available on Spotify; freestyles and live performances are excluded.
• The song’s runtime must not exceed 3 minutes and 30 seconds, aligning with the average duration of a Billboard Hot 100 hit.
• The song had to be made up of between 30% to 50% speechiness*
• The song features a single artist rapping in one language, excluding tracks with artificial voice effects from the same performer.

Speechiness is a unique metric created by Spotify that measures how much spoken word content is present in a track. This scale ranges from 0 to 1, but for our analysis, it’s normalized to a percentage from 0% to 100%.

Americans may lead the pack in the fastest English-language rappers, but UK artists have made a significant mark by securing six out of the top ten positions for syllable-dense commercially released tracks. Topping the list is London-born rapper Ocean Wisdom with his song “Tom & Jerry,” which features an impressive 1,178 syllables. Close behind is Riko Dan’s “Hard Food,” boasting 1,076 syllables.

Our top ten features two standout tracks from US rappers: Kendrick Lamar’s “DNA,” which impressively delivers 1,008 syllables per minute, and indie artist Sage Francis’ “Grace,” boasting 982 syllables per minute. Additionally, Australian rapper Rops1’s “Trust Me” ranks fifth with 988 syllables.

In which language do rappers use the most syllables per second?

Rapping in various languages introduces unique rhythms, grammar, and phonetic nuances, offering listeners a fresh perspective within hip-hop’s diverse landscape. We explored the syllable speed of artists from around the globe who rap in nine different languages, showcasing the rich variety in this vibrant art form.

Our analysis revealed that English-language artists dominate the rap scene, delivering an impressive average of 4.13 syllables per second—making them the fastest rappers globally. Italian artists follow closely, rapping at an average of 4.01 syllables per second. In contrast, Russian-speaking rappers take the slower pace, averaging 2.96 syllables per second.

Which non-English speaking rappers are the fastest?

Meet the speedsters of the rap world! In the English language, US artist Ab-Soul holds the title for the fastest rapper, delivering an astounding 8.31 syllables per second. Over in Italy, Shiva showcases his talent with an impressive average of 6.33 syllables per second. Meanwhile, Puerto Rican rapper Kendo Kaponi dominates the Spanish language scene, rapping at an average speed of 6.11 syllables per second. These artists push the boundaries of lyrical speed and rhythm!

Notable absentees

Chopper rapping, a dynamic style that emerged from the Midwestern United States, is famous for its lightning-fast delivery and intricate rhythms.

Our analysis examines the pace of syllables throughout an entire track, revealing that some artists have a wordier rapping style, delivering more syllables over the course of their songs. In contrast, others may rap quickly but only during certain sections. Among those ranked, renowned chopper rappers like Twista and Tech N9ne stand out, averaging between 4.89 and 5.22 syllables per second across their entire catalog. This highlights their exceptional ability to pack a significant number of words into each track.

Although not included in our analysis, South Korean rapper Outsider has gained fame for his incredible speed, previously clocking in at 721 syllables in just 21 seconds. This impressive feat translates to an astonishing average of 22 words per second, earning him a spot among the fastest rappers globally.

Our findings

Across the globe, artists from the realms of rap, grime, spoken word, and their various sub-genres have showcased extraordinary talent in wordplay and storytelling. Their creative expressions not only push artistic boundaries but also resonate deeply with audiences, highlighting the power of language in music.

Crafting lyrics that weave a compelling narrative is impressive for any rapper, but some artists elevate this skill by delivering their stories at a rapid pace and intricate rhythm, all while keeping listeners fully engaged with their message.

While artists like Twista and Eminem have secured their legendary status with their incredibly rapid-fire verses, our analysis sought to uncover which musicians and their multilingual songs pack the most syllables into their entire tracks.

Our analysis uncovered numerous instances of rapid-fire rapping across all nine languages studied. Interestingly, some artists who typically aren’t recognized for their speed outpaced renowned rappers like Tech N9ne and Busta Rhymes when it came to the total syllables packed into their songs.

Notes on methodology

• Our study commenced with a curated seed list of 1,000 multilingual rappers, featuring artists who perform in English, French, German, Italian, Danish, Dutch, Russian, Spanish, and Polish.
• We sourced the lyrics of each rapper’s commercially released singles and album tracks from Genius.com, cross-referencing with Spotify to eliminate freestyles and unofficial recordings.
• Each song’s lyrics were analyzed using a Python tool that counts syllables in multiple languages.
• The speed of each rapper’s rapping was measured on ‘syllables per second’ across a whole track’s run time.
• When analyzing song speed based on syllable count, we narrowed our selection to tracks that:

1. Had a run time of 3 minutes 30 seconds or less — the average length of a Billboard Hot 100 song

2. The analysis revealed a speechiness score ranging from 0.3 to 0.5. This metric, created by Spotify, measures the extent of spoken words in a track on a scale from 0 to 1, which we have normalized here to a percentage scale of 0% to 100%.

3. Were sung in one language by just one rapper on the entire length of the track

• Note: This study is limited by the runtime of each song, though many examples exist of tracks featuring faster rapping based on syllable count in specific sections.
