Canadians are often portrayed as the epitome of politeness, celebrated for their friendly demeanor and tendency to apologize frequently. This reputation raises an interesting question: is this stereotype truly accurate? Moreover, are there regions in Canada that challenge this perception?
At LingualNeeds, an online tutoring service featuring a diverse range of educators, including French tutors across Canada, we conducted a survey involving over 1,500 residents from 44 major Canadian cities. We explored their perceptions of common rude behaviors, the frequency of swearing, and their thoughts on the stereotype of Canadians being exceptionally polite.
We meticulously analyzed the data to identify the cities that rank as the rudest and most polite, using a scale from one to ten, where ten represents the rudest. Our research also sheds light on the most common impolite behaviors observed in these urban areas.

The rudest cities in Canada
Our research reveals that Vaughan, Coquitlam, and Brampton rank as the three rudest cities in Canada. While the average rudeness score across the country is 5.22, these cities stand out with significantly higher scores of 8.05, 7.85, and 7.05, respectively.
Vaughan has earned the dubious distinction of being Canada’s rudest city, a surprising revelation for a place known for its popular attraction, Canada’s Wonderland. Research indicates that residents here exhibit rudeness levels nearly three times higher than those in Markham, the country’s least rude city, despite their close proximity of just 20 kilometers.
Vaughan, a bustling hub for commuters, has earned a reputation for its heavy traffic, which may explain the growing frustration among its residents. In fact, you’re more likely to encounter drivers who won’t wave a thank you when you let them merge in Vaughan than in many other places. Nearby Brampton shares a similar fate, often ranking among the top three cities for traffic-related irritations.
Across the country, Coquitlam ranks as the second rudest city. This area is characterized by its damp climate and steep hills, which can contribute to a less cheerful demeanor among residents, making them less likely to adhere to the typical polite stereotype.
The most polite cities in Canada
While it’s a common stereotype that Canadians are exceptionally polite, it’s important to note that not every city in Canada fits this mold. In fact, a remarkable 83% of Canadians embrace this reputation for kindness, showcasing the country’s overall culture of politeness.
In our survey of Canadian cities, Markham (2.91), Saguenay (3.87), and Cape Breton (3.88) emerged as the top three for politeness. Interestingly, all ten of the politest cities are situated in Eastern Canada, suggesting a notable East-West divide in social manners.
Leading the way is Markham, recognized as Canada’s most diverse community. Its vibrant cultural tapestry and variety of residents foster a unique atmosphere of tolerance and politeness, setting it apart from many other cities in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA).

How does the GTA compare?
Two cities in the Greater Toronto Area have earned reputations for having some of the rudest behavior. But what about their neighboring cities? How do they stack up in terms of politeness and courtesy?
The Greater Toronto Area (GTA), spanning 7,124 km², showcases a wide range of urban manners among its cities. Markham, known for its cultural diversity, and the low-crime town of Oakville stand out as the most courteous, with scores of 2.91 and 4.46, respectively. In contrast, Toronto, while bustling and vibrant, has a politeness rating of 5.91, slightly above the national average of 5.41.
The most common rude behaviors
In our quest to uncover the cities in Canada with the best and worst manners, we also aimed to identify the most common rude behaviors nationwide. Our findings revealed that excessive phone use tops the list of impolite habits, with Vaughan being the leading city in this regard.
In Coquitlam, the second rudest city in Canada based on our research, you’re likely to witness some surprising behaviors—like people chatting on their phones while checking out or even spitting in public!

In addition to identifying the rudest cities in Canada, we were curious about which cities have the highest swearing rates. Our survey revealed that the average Canadian drops about 9 swear words each day!
However, Burlington eclipsed this average with a whopping 15 swear words used per day, making them Canada’s biggest swearers.
We also found that more women than men claim they “never swear”: 23% of women vs 18% of men.
Which Canadian cities apologize the most?
“Sorry” is a quintessential part of Canadian culture, but just how deeply ingrained is this habit? Our research reveals that the average Canadian offers an apology about nine times a day, with one city recording an astonishing average of 18 apologies daily.
Burlington claims the title for the most frequent apologies, averaging 18 heartfelt “sorries” each day—possibly a way to balance out their swearing habits! Hot on its heels is Oakville, where residents offer 15 apologies daily. Meanwhile, Longueuil and Guelph round out the list, each expressing remorse 14 times a day.
Conclusion
Our study highlights that certain cities may exhibit ruder behavior than others, but on the whole, Canadians are known for their politeness. With an average rudeness score of just 5.41 on a scale from one to ten—where ten represents the highest level of rudeness—it’s clear that the stereotypical Canadian tendency to apologize holds strong. Canada’s reputation for courtesy remains intact!

Methodology: Between July 24 and 28, 2023, we conducted a survey involving 1,518 Canadian residents across 44 cities. Participants were selected by Censuswide and were required to have lived in Canada for at least 12 months to qualify for the survey.
To determine the rudest and most polite cities, we surveyed participants about the frequency of 26 common disrespectful behaviors they observe in their communities. By averaging the responses, we created a “rudeness score” for each city, allowing us to rank them based on their levels of civility.
To uncover the Canadian cities where swearing and apologies are most common, we surveyed residents about their daily use of profanity and the frequency of their apologies. By analyzing their responses, we calculated the average number of times people swear and say “sorry” each day.
To gauge the truth behind the stereotype of Canadians being polite, we posed the question to respondents: “Do you believe this stereotype accurately reflects Canadians?”
