In 2023, we explored the landscape of music by identifying the most successful Canadian artists alongside the top international performers in Canada. Utilizing a dataset named Emotion, we delved into Reddit fan forums for each artist, analyzing posts to uncover and categorize the predominant emotions expressed. Our focus centered on three key emotions: happiness, sadness, and anger. Interestingly, we discovered that fans often experience a blend of these feelings, as many artists evoke a range of emotions in their audiences. Here’s what our findings revealed.

Certain artists excel at creating lyrics and melodies that celebrate life’s joyful moments. Among those studied, Shania Twain stands out as having the happiest fanbase. It’s no wonder, considering the country-pop icon is known for uplifting anthems like “Man! I Feel Like A Woman!” and “That Don’t Impress Me Much,” which inspire joy and empowerment in her listeners.
Following closely behind in the Canadian music scene are the dynamic duo Banx + Ranx and the talented Johnny Reid, both of whom have a remarkable ability to bring joy to their fans through their distinct musical styles. Securing the fourth spot is Celine Dion, celebrated as the “Queen of Power Ballads,” while the fifth position goes to the beloved “King of Christmas,” Michael Bublé. In January 2024, we delved into an extensive analysis of nearly 800,000 posts and comments from Reddit’s vibrant fan communities, encompassing 96 renowned music artists and bands.
Discover our curated collection of artists that highlights both homegrown talents and international stars making waves in Canada. Our selection is based on the Billboard Canadian Hot 100 Year-End Chart, which includes not only solo artists but also those featured on popular tracks. We categorized these artists into two groups: Canadian and International, encompassing all non-native performers. Additionally, we’ve featured the top 25 “biggest Canadian artists” from the Nielsen Music Canada era, as recognized by Billboard. Explore our list to see who’s shaping the Canadian music scene!
We conducted a thorough analysis of 150 to 200 posts from each artist’s subreddit, resulting in a substantial collection of 1,500 to 20,000 comments. On average, our review encompassed 170 posts and more than 8,000 comments for each artist, providing valuable insights into their fan interactions.
We approached each post and comment as a standalone “statement” by utilizing the Emotion dataset, which analyzes the sentiment behind language. Each statement received scores based on five emotions: sadness, joy, anger, fear, and surprise. We then categorized each statement by its highest emotion score. For instance, to identify the saddest fanbase, we determined which subreddit had the greatest percentage of statements tagged as “sad” compared to other emotions.
