The top 10 most studied books

You probably remember the books you studied in middle school, but are those titles still dominating syllabuses now?

Our research shows a resounding yes! Geoffrey Chaucer’s *The Canterbury Tales* is featured on English Literature syllabuses more than any other work. Penned between 1387 and 1400, this captivating collection of short stories has been instrumental in establishing English as the leading language in literature.

Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley’s “Frankenstein” ranks as the second most-studied book in the nation, exploring themes of misunderstanding, misplaced fear, and love that resonate just as deeply today as they did at its inception. Following closely is John Milton’s “Paradise Lost,” which holds the third position among the most-read texts. Remarkably, Milton crafted this epic poem at the age of 60, reminding us all that it’s never too late to write your own masterpiece!

The 20 most studied authors

Despite female authors becoming more prevalent in English Literature courses, men still dominate the ‘most-read’ list.

Our analysis revealed that seven out of the ten most frequently studied authors are men. Notably, three remarkable women—Kate Chopin, Zora Neale Hurston, and Virginia Woolf—stand out as exceptions to this trend, showcasing their significant contributions to literature.

Renowned figures like William Shakespeare, Edgar Allan Poe, and William Faulkner are staples in English Literature curricula. Notably, Shakespeare’s works are studied nearly three times more than those of the leading female author, highlighting the significant gender disparity in literary recognition.

Historically, the literary world has often sidelined women, leading to a publishing landscape predominantly occupied by male authors. To navigate this bias, many female writers chose to publish their works anonymously or under male pseudonyms, allowing them to share their voices while circumventing societal barriers.
