We embarked on another exciting journey to explore the behaviors of Americans in the nation’s largest cities. Building on our 2022 study, we expanded our research by surveying over a dozen additional cities, alongside those we examined two years ago.

We posed a variety of intriguing questions, exploring topics such as the frequency of residents witnessing rude behavior, their perceptions of local natives compared to newcomers, and beyond. By analyzing these responses, we developed a rudeness score that ranks cities from the most to the least rude.

LingualNeeds conducted a survey to assess social behaviors in various cities, ultimately creating a rudeness score for each location based on residents’ observations. While official rankings were released, locals also voiced their opinions on the rudeness of their neighbors. Notably, residents in Miami, FL, Oakland, CA, and Tucson, AZ, believe that their cities top the list for rudeness compared to others.

Miami, FL, has gained a reputation for having some of the rudest residents, often attributed to a lack of public awareness, noise in communal spaces, and discourteous behavior towards service staff. Meanwhile, Philadelphia, PA, once the frontrunner for rudeness in 2022, has seen a positive shift, with its residents becoming noticeably kinder, now ranking second. However, not every city has experienced such improvements.

Surprisingly, several cities have seen a notable increase in their rudeness rankings since 2022. Louisville, KY, Charlotte, NC, and Austin, TX, each climbed at least five positions on the list of rudest cities, while Chicago, IL, moved up one spot.

Many individuals notice instances of rudeness across the country, which can distort their overall perception of Americans. When locals are asked to rate the behavior of residents in their city on a scale from 0 to 10, with 10 being the rudest, the average score is 4.9. Interestingly, as the presidential election approaches, half of the respondents believe that the level of rudeness among their fellow citizens has increased. Various factors may contribute to these social behaviors, highlighting a growing concern in communities.

Where Americans are least rude by city

In certain cities, you may often face discourteous behavior from those around you, but there are places where kindness prevails. According to the 2024 rankings, the cities known for their friendly atmospheres are Omaha, NE; Minneapolis, MN; and San Diego, CA.

From the Midwestern charm of Omaha to the neighborly warmth of Minneapolis and the relaxed vibe of San Diego, these cities consistently foster a friendly and inviting environment for both residents and visitors alike.

Reflecting on 2022, San Diego, CA, made notable strides in kindness, dropping 15 places on the list of rudest cities. The most improved cities, recognized for their enhanced friendliness, include Washington D.C., Detroit, MI, San Jose, CA, and Milwaukee, WI, all of which showed significant progress by moving down the rudeness rankings.

Rudest behaviors exhibited by Americans in 2024

Our research indicates that the duration of a person’s residency in a city can significantly shape perceptions of rudeness. Longtime residents often judge newcomers based on their anticipated behavior, with older Americans particularly inclined to view recent arrivals as ruder than those born and raised in the area. Interestingly, this sentiment is shared by both native residents and newer residents alike, highlighting a common bias against transplants.

No matter how long you’ve called a city home, encountering rude behavior can significantly shape your view of the community. A survey reveals that 1 in 4 residents believe their fellow citizens are the rudest in the state. This ongoing negativity has led many to reconsider their living situation, with nearly 25% contemplating a move due to the unkind interactions they face daily.

Navigating shared spaces can be challenging, especially when interacting with strangers who have varying expectations for behavior. In public, many Americans display discourteous habits, such as playing videos or music aloud and using speakerphones. On the road, residents often encounter rude drivers who block merging lanes or attempt to merge into closed lanes to gain an advantage. Alarmingly, 6 out of 10 Americans report witnessing drivers who disregard fundamental traffic rules, failing to slow down or exercise caution around pedestrians.

Interestingly, this tendency isn’t just limited to local interactions. When traveling abroad, 67% of people observe that Americans often come across as rude, even if it’s unintentional.

Experiencing rudeness during your day can create a lingering sense of negativity, prompting some individuals to take action against it. In fact, research reveals that 1 in 9 Americans have confronted someone they deemed rude in public. However, most people prefer a different approach: nearly 88% of Americans choose to ignore rude behavior, while about half simply walk away from the situation.

Methodology

In our latest study, we reached out to Americans nationwide to assess whether attitudes toward rudeness have shifted since our 2022 report. Echoing our original research, we posed a diverse set of questions about the rude behaviors observed in various cities. Topics ranged from how residents treat strangers and service workers to the disruptive use of phones in public spaces. We evaluated the responses by assigning scores based on the frequency of these rude behaviors, ultimately calculating an average score for each city. These scores were then standardized on a scale of 0 to 10, where 10 signifies the highest level of rudeness.

Building on the findings from the initial study of 30 cities, we expanded our research to include 16 additional cities. By comparing the rankings from 2022 to those in 2024, we were able to assess how residents’ behaviors have evolved over time.
