However, they can also lead to confusion; a surprising 81% of respondents report feeling puzzled by someone else’s emoji choice. In our quest to uncover the most perplexing emojis of 2024, LingualNeeds revisited the top ten emojis that left people scratching their heads in 2023. We conducted a fresh survey to gauge respondents’ interpretations of these symbols, employing standard deviation to analyze the responses. This allowed us to pinpoint which emojis continue to baffle Americans the most.

You might assume that the most perplexing emoji would be one showing a complicated emotion, but that’s not the case! Research reveals that the emoji of a painted finger with nail polish tops the confusion chart. While 40% interpret it as a symbol of sophistication or luxury, others use it to convey simple meanings like “just nail polish,” “Don’t mind me hehe,” or “self-care.” Following closely behind in the confusion stakes are the dashing away emoji 💨 and the upside-down face 🙃.

Lastly, the upside-down face emoji seems to puzzle those living in the South the most.

Cultural backgrounds, societal norms, and language can all shape how we interpret emojis, leading to varied meanings even among people in the same state. For instance, while one person might see your 👍 as a sign of approval or agreement, another could perceive it as a passive-aggressive or dismissive gesture. This ambiguity can lead to awkward misunderstandings; in fact, nearly half of people—48%—have experienced a situation where a misinterpreted emoji caused discomfort.

Americans’ interpretations of the new emojis coming in 2024

Exciting news for emoji enthusiasts! In Spring 2024, an additional 118 new emojis will be released, as reported by Emojipedia. To gauge how well these new symbols will connect with Americans, we conducted a survey focusing on three particular emojis: the horizontally shaking head, the vertically shaking head, and a majestic phoenix.

Among the three emojis, the phoenix emerged as the most likely to perplex users, with 64% expressing confusion. While many recognized it as a phoenix, others interpreted it in varied ways, associating it with themes like fiery passion and rebirth. The creative interpretations were fascinating, with some likening it to a flaming pegasus and others suggesting it could serve as Elon Musk’s new logo for X (formerly Twitter).

The two emojis that depict shaking heads have sparked quite a bit of confusion among users. For some, the horizontal head-shaking emoji conveys “no,” while others see it as a sign of happiness or even dizziness. Similarly, the vertical head-shaking emoji has elicited mixed interpretations, ranging from “yes” to “sleepy.” As these new emojis make their way into conversations, it’s essential to consider their various meanings and seek clarification when something isn’t clear.

The most common emojis people don’t use as intended

LingualNeeds conducted an intriguing analysis revealing the most commonly misused emojis—those that convey meanings different from their intended definitions. Surprisingly, the “persevering face” emoji tops the list, with only 5% of users employing it as intended; most people actually use it to express frustration. Following closely are the “fearful face” and “nail polish” emojis, which have also strayed from their original meanings.

Methodology

In February 2024, we conducted a survey of 2,021 Americans across 40 states to explore their interpretations of various emojis. By examining the standard deviation for each question, we identified which emojis caused the most confusion. Our diverse group of respondents, aged 18 to 76, included 49% females, 48% males, and 2% identifying as nonbinary.
