Meet Andreas Graef, an accomplished tutor on a mission to help his students master German.
For nearly a decade, he has transformed the lives of countless language learners. With almost 5,000 online lessons completed and a stellar 5-star rating on his LingualNeeds profile, I’m excited to discuss his teaching methods and discover the secrets behind his exceptional online tutoring success.
During my conversation with Andreas, I was intrigued to discover that he wasn’t located in the usual financial hubs of Berlin, Frankfurt, or Zurich. Instead, he resides in Santa Cruz, Bolivia—a place that captivates him deeply.
“I have a deep appreciation for this country and its incredibly friendly people. Many are surprised to see me in South America! My students often ask about my journey to Bolivia, what life is like here, and how long I’ve been in Santa Cruz. The experience is a stark contrast to Germany, and I find great joy in living here.”
Let’s delve into the story of Andreas, uncover the key factors behind his remarkable success, and discover the valuable insights he has to offer to online educators.
Growing as a teacher
Originally trained as a business engineer, Andreas discovered his passion for language teaching and decided to pursue it full time. Throughout his career, he has shared his expertise at esteemed institutions such as the Goethe Institute and the FISK Institute, and he even founded his own language school.
He specializes in guiding his students through the preparation process for the Goethe and TELC exams, as well as other comparable assessments. With a knack for connecting with learners of all ages and language proficiencies, he takes pride in tailoring his lessons to meet the unique needs of each student.
Andreas knows firsthand the hurdles and frustrations that often accompany the study of grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation. With his proficiency in both English and Spanish at the C2 level, he relates deeply to the struggles of language learners. This personal experience allows him to empathize with his students and provide them with the support they need on their own language learning journeys.
So how did he get started?
Initially, like many educators, I sought ways to supplement my income while pursuing my studies. At that time, I was in Bolivia, so I approached the local German school to inquire about tutoring opportunities. They welcomed me on board, and I began assisting students with their homework.
But it turns out it was more than just a part-time job opportunity for him.
Teaching brought me immense joy, as it was not only enjoyable but also a gateway to understanding diverse cultures and individuals. This experience sparked my passion for education and connection.
It wasn’t always easy though. When he transitioned to being a teacher, he had some challenges.
“Adjusting to new structures and teaching styles was quite challenging for me. However, when I began teaching online with LingualNeeds, I found myself needing to shift my teaching approach once more and adapt to the digital environment.”
Stepping into an online world
As of now, Andreas has conducted an impressive total of 4,834 lessons on LingualNeeds—an accomplishment that truly reflects a wealth of teaching experience! Intrigued by his journey, I wondered what advice he would offer his younger self if he could travel back in time.
Before my first online class, I reminded myself to stay calm and focused. I made it a priority to connect with my students, actively listening to their needs and preferences to create a more engaging learning experience.
It’s completely normal for first-time online language tutors to feel nervous. However, those concerns about technology and handling an online classroom quickly fade once they realize just how simple the process can be.
“Before joining LingualNeeds, I had no experience with online teaching,” he shares. “However, I’ve found that one-on-one online instruction offers a unique experience. It allows teachers to focus intensely on a single student, which can simplify the process. Plus, you can avoid the common classroom management challenges that arise with larger groups.”
For Andreas, online teaching came with another advantage:
“Online you can focus on the student directly and try to adapt to them 100%.”

In addition to attracting new paying clients, I’ve relished the opportunity to connect with diverse individuals and learn about their unique cultures,” he shares. “Teaching offers a profound perspective on various countries, as I have students from the USA, Senegal, and many other places around the globe.
Andreas’ advice for teaching online
Andreas has some top tips for teaching adults and children online. First, he talks about the technology:
While the LingualNeeds platform is an excellent resource, it’s important to be prepared for potential internet connection issues, especially if you find yourself in places like Bolivia, where connectivity can be unpredictable. To ensure you stay connected, consider having a backup plan in place, such as switching to your mobile data if your Wi-Fi falters.
When it comes to teaching adults, he says he was a little nervous at first.
Reflecting on his early experiences, he shares, “As a young teacher, I often worried about how to engage with older students. Some of them are quite specific about their preferences—I’ve had one or two who dictate exactly what they want in my lesson plans. However, it’s crucial for teachers to adapt, as students are clients in their own right.”
And what advice does Andreas have for teaching children online?
Children can be quite a handful, especially when it comes to keeping their attention. Their ability to get distracted quickly poses a real challenge. Motivation is key! For instance, I have a student who only feels inspired to study when an exam is looming. Unfortunately, this last-minute approach isn’t effective for mastering a language!
Here’s what Andreas recommends doing to keep the students’ motivation high:
Get to know them
“Try to find out what the kids like, what they’re interested in and their hobbies.”
Build a strong connection
“They truly need to feel a connection with you; if they don’t, their attention will drift away,” he explains. “Often, they’ll share personal details, like introducing you to their pet. It’s crucial to show genuine interest—I’ve noticed that when you engage with them, their learning accelerates.”
Play games
“Consider breaking up the lesson or saving it for the end of class when students may be feeling tired. I’ve found that many of my students enjoy playing hangman, which can be a fun and engaging way to reinforce what they’ve learned!”
Ask Questions
“Encourage your children to share by asking plenty of questions. They enjoy discussing their day, family, and school experiences, which helps strengthen your bond with them,” he explains.
Have rules
And what if Andreas notices bad behavior in his classes?
“I typically reach out to parents only when we’re facing significant challenges. I often say, ‘I really prefer not to contact your dad, but if you don’t complete your homework…’ and that usually motivates them!”
