The rudest Australian cities

When residents of Bundaberg, Rockhampton, and Brisbane in Queensland were asked to evaluate the rudeness of their city, they were quick to blame their neighbors for the perceived lack of civility.

We invited participants to evaluate the rudeness of the typical resident in their city using a scale from one to ten. The results showed that while the national average rudeness score is 5.31, the cities in question received higher ratings of 5.81, 5.79, and 5.58, respectively.

What’s causing the grumpiness in Queensland? One possible culprit is the humidity. All three major cities in the region face subtropical climate conditions, leading to sweltering and sticky summers that can test anyone’s patience.

In recent years, Queensland has faced a series of intense climate challenges, including devastating floods, scorching heatwaves, prolonged droughts, and destructive bushfires. It’s important to recognize that for residents who have lost their homes in the wake of these floods, the stress and uncertainty they endure is immense. Living in such turmoil would understandably take a toll on anyone’s well-being.

Interestingly, the Queensland cities that rank among the top ten for rudeness are also some of the most populous in the state. In bustling urban environments, where daily interactions are plentiful, behaviors deemed ‘rude’ tend to be more prevalent compared to smaller towns. This suggests that the sheer volume of social exchanges can influence perceptions of politeness.

Living in a busy city often means that what might seem rude or aggressive is simply a way for people to protect themselves. Meanwhile, Queensland, how about a warm hug to brighten your day?

The most polite Australian cities

On the flip side, the cities that ranked highest for politeness are Sunshine Coast, QLD (4.58), Hobart, TAS (4.71), and Melton, VIC (4.77). These impressive scores reflect a welcoming and courteous atmosphere, making them excellent options for anyone considering a visit or even a move.

The Sunshine Coast has earned the top spot in the politeness rankings, bringing a sense of comfort to our friends in Queensland. It’s reassuring to know that at least one city in the region is embracing a laid-back vibe. Renowned for its stunning beaches and consistently warm climate, this coastal paradise provides a lifestyle that feels nearly perfect.

Who displays the most rudeness: Locals or non-locals?

We then invited our respondents to share their insights by ranking who they believe displays ruder behavior: the locals, those born and raised in their cities, or the non-locals who have relocated there later in life.

Overall, our survey revealed a striking divide among respondents: half perceived non-locals as rude, while the other half felt locals were the culprits. Interestingly, this perception shifted significantly depending on the city, highlighting the diverse attitudes across different regions.

The cities noted for having the rudest locals are Toowoomba, Wollongong, Perth, Cranbourne, and Melbourne. This suggests that the residents, who have spent their entire lives in these areas, may have developed behaviors influenced by the unique culture of their cities.

Methodology:

Between July 24 and 28, 2023, we conducted a survey involving 1,503 residents from Australia’s 22 largest cities, all of whom had lived in their city for at least one year. The results revealed that 26.15% of participants identified as men, while 73.85% identified as women.

To determine the most and least polite cities, we surveyed residents who rated the rudeness of their fellow citizens on a scale from one to ten, with one being very polite and ten being extremely rude. We then calculated the average “rudeness score” for each city based on these ratings. Cities that scored above the average were recognized as the most polite, while those scoring below average were identified as the rudest.
