America’s favorite breakup songs
As Paul McCartney poignantly expressed, “Yesterday, love was such an easy game to play. Now I need a place to hide away.” This lyric reminds us that love can sometimes falter, leaving us in search of solace when relationships don’t unfold as we hoped.
When you’re grappling with a broken heart, one of the most effective remedies can be to retreat into your own space. Slip on some headphones and immerse yourself in the healing power of a heartfelt breakup song. It can provide a cathartic release that helps you process your emotions and find solace in the music.
Heartbreak stories come in various shades, from deep, sorrowful tones to bold anthems of resilience against betrayal. Some songs cleverly hide their poignant lyrics beneath lively melodies, creating a contrast that resonates deeply. While many breakup songs mourn the loss of love, others embrace the liberation that comes from ending a relationship. With countless paths to love, there are just as many ways to navigate the heart’s complex journey back to solitude!
Many of us can pinpoint at least one song that captures the complex and often painful aspects of love. Here’s a look at some of America’s top picks for those heart-wrenching tunes:

Leading the charge in our roundup of emotional anthems is Miley Cyrus’s “Flowers.” This powerful ballad celebrates self-love and resilience following a breakup, making it a standout track for anyone navigating heartache.
Olivia Rodrigo proudly holds the title of Breakup Bigshot, with an impressive four songs featured on our list—more than any other artist. At just 20 years old, this Californian sensation has achieved global acclaim. Interestingly, however, none of her tracks made it onto the state’s favorite anti-love anthem list.
Notably, the top 10 is largely filled with emerging artists, with only three having made their mark in the music industry prior to 2010. This raises an intriguing question: could the dynamic and often unpredictable nature of young love be influencing their popularity?
In a surprising twist that challenges the notion of fairytale endings, four of the top artists on our list began their journeys on children’s television! Miley Cyrus, Olivia Rodrigo, Chord Overstreet, and Ariana Grande all enjoyed successful careers on screen before making their mark in the music industry.

Why do we listen to love songs and breakup songs?
At some stage in our lives, we all experience a breakup. Whether you’re the one initiating the separation or finding yourself on the receiving end, ending a relationship is rarely a straightforward or painless process.
Each person navigates the whirlwind of emotions that comes after a breakup in their own unique way. Often, this journey leads us to a period of self-reflection, where we thoughtfully analyze both the highs and lows of the relationship, seeking to understand what went right and what went wrong.
These deep reflections are often deeply personal, which can make sharing them with friends feel uncomfortable. Because each person’s experience is unique, it can be challenging for others to truly grasp what you’re going through.
Falling in love evokes an indescribable flood of joy that envelops us completely, yet sharing these intense feelings can feel daunting. Social norms often encourage us to keep such emotions private. Fortunately, music serves as a powerful medium for expressing what words cannot, resonating deeply with our souls. As Hans Christian Andersen wisely noted, “Where words fail, music speaks.”
No matter if you’re overwhelmed with emotions or feeling isolated, there’s an artist who captures these experiences in a powerful musical story. Just as online Spanish or English lessons help you connect and communicate, their melodies create a shared language that goes beyond words. Their lyrics provide strength and companionship, walking alongside us through every twist and turn of our journey—much like the camaraderie found in online language courses.

Methodology:
We embarked on a journey to uncover the most beloved love and breakup songs from each U.S. state, celebrating the profound impact of music as a means of expressing our deepest emotions.
We utilized a Spotify playlist mining tool to gather data on the most popular songs from themed playlists centered around keywords like “love,” “romantic,” “Valentine’s Day,” “heartbreak,” and “breakup.” This analysis highlights the tracks that resonate most with listeners during these emotional moments.
Next, we gathered the top 100 featured songs for each keyword, examining the total U.S. search volume for each track by using the query format “[song name] song.” This allowed us to identify the most popular love songs and breakup anthems resonating across America.
The individual keyword lists were transformed into two distinct topic categories: a “love” list and a “breakup” list. These lists highlight the top 30 songs that capture the essence of America’s favorite love anthems and heart-wrenching breakup tunes.
We set out to discover the most beloved love and breakup songs across the United States by harnessing the power of Google Trends. By analyzing data for the top 30 love songs and conducting a separate search for the top 30 breakup tracks, we were able to identify each state’s musical favorites.
Data was collected and analyzed in January 2024.
