The shows with the highest “intelligence score”

To assess the intelligence of a show, we employed an AI tool to evaluate each script based on five key criteria: vocabulary breadth, vocabulary sophistication, text readability, critical thinking, and contextual relevance.
Even though “Person of Interest” concluded its five-season journey in 2016, it continues to hold the top spot in our ranking of the smartest TV shows. With an impressive score of 7.00 out of 10, it excelled across all five evaluation categories, solidifying its reputation as the “smartest show” on television.
In a tightly contested battle for second place, the new series *Wednesday* emerged victorious, earning an impressive score of 6.38 out of 10. The show’s extensive vocabulary played a significant role in boosting its intelligence ranking, showcasing its depth and appeal.
Vocabulary is a crucial foundation of effective communication, and expanding your word bank is essential for mastering any language. According to language expert Sylvia Johnson, this expansion is key to understanding and expressing more complex ideas. She emphasizes that learning new words not only enriches your language skills but also significantly improves your overall communication abilities.
Expanding your vocabulary with more advanced synonyms for common words can enhance your communication skills and make you sound more articulate. According to Johnson, engaging with a tutor and utilizing word expansion tools are effective strategies to enrich your vocabulary and boost your confidence in conversations.
Taking the third spot is *Criminal Minds*, a gripping series that follows an FBI team as they delve into the complexities of murder investigations. The show’s recent reboot has garnered a score of 6.30 out of 10, which may be influenced by the beloved character Dr. Spencer Reid, celebrated for his extraordinary intellect and an impressive IQ of 187.
Breaking Bad ranks 8th overall in intelligence but stands out in 4th place for critical thinking. This impressive ranking makes sense given that the show’s main character, Walter White, is a former high school chemistry teacher who turns to manufacturing and selling crystal meth.
While Ted Lasso ranks 14th in overall intelligence, Grey’s Anatomy shines with a 4th place standing in textual readability. This distinction is understandable, given the show’s intricate dialogues where doctors tackle medical conditions and navigate complex diagnoses.
Although the main characters in Riverdale are high school students, the show impressively ranks fourth in vocabulary sophistication. Targeting a younger audience, it serves as a valuable tool for viewers of all ages to enhance their vocabulary and improve their communication skills as they develop.
Regarding animated shows, Rick and Morty ranks 11th for overall intelligence, and 6th for vocabulary breadth.
The TV shows that curse and use offensive language the most

Alongside evaluating intelligence scores, we aimed to identify the TV shows with the highest frequency of cursing. Interestingly, we discovered no direct link between the amount of swearing and the rankings of the smartest shows. In fact, none of the series with the highest curse counts made it into the top three for intelligence.
Topping the charts with an impressive average of 29 curse words per episode is *The Wire*. Set against the backdrop of Baltimore’s drug trade, this acclaimed series reflects the gritty realities of urban life, making its language a fitting element of the narrative.
“Breaking Bad” and “Dexter” rank as the second and third most profane shows, featuring an average of 15 and 14 curse words per episode, respectively. While the use of profanity doesn’t reflect one’s intelligence, it can serve as a powerful form of expression and, in some instances, foster connections between people.
On the other hand, Vikings, The Simpsons, and The Big Bang Theory are the “cleanest” shows with the least curse words on average.
In our study, we explored the use of language that, while not necessarily profane enough to warrant a “swear jar” donation, could still earn a show a mature audience rating. To highlight this aspect, we established a new ranking category called “offensive language,” which showcases series that frequently employ mature language.
Our findings mirrored those of The Wire, which topped the list for offensive language. Each episode features an average of 29 curse words, along with around ten additional offensive terms.
In the realm of television, “Succession” leads with an average of seven offensive words per episode, followed closely by “Rick and Morty” at five. Tying for fourth place are “Stranger Things,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” and “Ted Lasso,” each featuring around four offensive words per episode.

Methodology
In our research, we gathered scripts from the first season of 25 popular TV shows that feature intellectually stimulating themes. Our selection includes both current favorites and recent hits. We then utilized an AI tool to analyze each script, assigning an “Intelligence Score” ranging from 1 to 10, where 10 represents the highest level of intellectual engagement.
To assess the quality of each show, we utilized an AI tool to evaluate the scripts based on five key factors: vocabulary breadth, vocabulary sophistication, text readability, critical thinking, and contextual relevance. By averaging these five factors, we generated an overall score for each episode. We then calculated the “intelligence score” for each show by averaging the overall scores of all its episodes.
Breakdown of each ranking factor:
- Vocabulary breadth: The extent of word diversity, reflecting the speaker’s linguistic range
- Vocabulary sophistication: The complexity of words utilized indicates the speaker’s depth of knowledge
- Textual readability: The complexity of sentence structures and ideas, denoting the intellectual depth of the conversation
- Critical thinking: The quality of argument construction, deconstruction and analysis, reflecting the speaker’s logical reasoning capabilities
- Contextual relevance: The speaker’s ability to interconnect the dialogue with broader contexts or other fields, signaling a comprehensive understanding
Alongside assessing the “intelligence score,” we analyzed the frequency of profanity and offensive language in each show, identifying the most commonly used words. Our research cataloged a total of 78 terms, comprising 30 profane words that reflect expressions of anger or frustration, and 48 offensive terms that encompass inappropriate or harmful language, including racial and homophobic slurs, as well as explicit sexual references.
To establish a more accurate word ranking, we eliminated character names and filler words that tend to repeat across different shows. Common fillers such as “like,” “just,” and “um” were excluded to ensure a clearer analysis of the most frequently used words.
