Bangkok, Thailand, claims the runner-up position as a top travel destination, with an impressive 19% of visitors choosing to return—the highest rate among all Asian countries studied. The city boasts a staggering 347 attractions, offering everything from tantalizing street food to stunning temples, making it a cultural haven for potential relocators. Moreover, the cost of living in Bangkok has dramatically decreased in recent years, plummeting from $2,715 in 2022 to just $1,048 in 2024.

Ranking third is Dubai, a city renowned for its opulent lifestyle. The cost of living here is notably steep, averaging $3,787 per month. However, the allure of Dubai extends beyond its luxury, as its tax laws offer a significant advantage: individuals earning over £50,000 pay no income tax. This appealing financial incentive makes Dubai a popular choice for those considering relocation.

Ranked fourth is Penang, Malaysia, where the average monthly living expense is $691. Just behind it in fifth place is Chiang Mai, Thailand, with a slightly lower monthly cost of $665.

In 2022, Singapore was home to 1.23 million expats and migrant workers, highlighting its appeal as a relocation destination. To assist those considering a move, we researched the most budget-friendly and the priciest neighborhoods for renting a one-bedroom condo. This information will help prospective residents find the perfect place to call home in this vibrant city.

The top five cheapest places to rent in Singapore

If you’re looking for the best rental value in Singapore, Ang Mo Kio is the place to be. Residents enjoy an average monthly household income of $5,499, while renting a one-bedroom condo typically costs around $1,268. This means that only 23% of their income goes toward rent, the lowest percentage on our list, making Ang Mo Kio one of the most affordable neighborhoods to consider for your next move.

Sembawang ranks as the second-best area for rental value, boasting a higher average household income of $8,499. Despite this, the average monthly rent in Sembawang is nearly double that of Ang Mo Kio, sitting at $2,329. Consequently, residents allocate just a bit more of their income to rent, with 27% going toward housing costs.

In third place is Yishun, where residents allocate 28% of their income to rent. Punggol follows closely in fourth, with 29% of income directed towards housing costs, while Choa Chu Kang takes fifth place, with 30% of average income spent on rent.

The top five most expensive places to rent in Singapore

Toa Payoh has emerged as Singapore’s priciest rental hotspot, where residents are shelling out a staggering 91% of their monthly income just to secure a one-bedroom condominium. This highlights the area’s soaring rental costs and the financial strain it places on its inhabitants.

In Toa Payoh, the typical household earns about $5,499 per month, but with monthly rent soaring to $5,007, residents are left with very little disposable income after covering their housing costs.

Bukit Merah ranks second for the least affordable rental value, with a staggering 86% of residents’ incomes going toward rent. While households in this area share the same average monthly income as those in Toa Payoh, the rent is slightly lower at $4,712, making it a marginally more manageable option.

Outram ranks third, with residents allocating approximately 77% of their income to cover rent. Following closely in fourth place is Kallang at 75%, while Geylang holds the fifth spot with 66% of income spent on housing costs.
