The rudest cities in the UK

According to recent findings, the UK’s three rudest cities are Bristol, Hull, and Coventry. Each of these urban centers received rudeness scores significantly higher than the national average of 5.22, with Bristol leading at 5.84, followed closely by both Hull and Coventry, each scoring 5.74.

Bristol has earned the dubious distinction of being the rudest city in the UK. Yet, it’s also celebrated as one of Britain’s most progressive urban centers—home to renowned street artist and political activist Banksy. This intriguing contrast may shed light on why the city has topped the list.

It’s reasonable to think that progressive residents who champion equality would inherently be polite—and they likely are. However, they might also be more attuned to impolite behavior and more critical of themselves when addressing our inquiries. This heightened awareness could help clarify the ranking.

Another factor may be the influence of British etiquette, which emerged from the strict class system prevalent during the Victorian era. This hierarchical structure was often designed to keep the lower classes from ascending the social ladder and gaining power.

The apparent rudeness of Bristolians may stem from the city’s readiness to challenge social norms. Notably, they scored high in areas like disregarding personal space (6.03) and being loud in public (6.10)—behaviors that would have been deemed unacceptable in Victorian Britain.

Bristol, as a vibrant international city, boasts a rich tapestry of cultural perspectives on public behavior. This diversity can lead to misunderstandings, particularly when it comes to etiquette. For instance, you may notice more people jumping queues here than in other parts of the UK—an act considered quite rude by British standards. Understanding these cultural differences can shed light on such behaviors.

For residents and former inhabitants of the UK, it might come as a shock that London doesn’t hold the top spot. In 2017, the Centre for London think tank proposed a “civility code” aimed at fostering mutual respect among pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers in the capital.

Although London doesn’t make the top five for rude driving behaviors, the think tank’s widely discussed proposal—though not yet enforced—seems to have inspired residents to improve their road manners.

The most polite cities in the UK

In our survey of 19 cities, Sheffield (4.90), Derby (4.90), Bradford (4.94), and Manchester (5.09) stood out as the most polite. These vibrant urban centers are not only known for their charm but also their proximity to the stunning Peak District, one of the UK’s most picturesque national parks, and the majestic Pennines, renowned for their expansive moorlands and breathtaking valleys.

Recent studies reveal that spending time in nature offers numerous benefits, such as fostering kindness, boosting happiness, and enhancing generosity. This stunning natural environment may explain why residents in these areas tend to exhibit greater politeness in public settings. Additionally, our findings align with the stereotype that people from the northern regions are generally more friendly than their southern counterparts.

The most common rude behaviors

In our quest to uncover the UK cities with the best and worst manners, we also explored the most common rude behaviors across the nation. Our findings revealed that excessive phone use tops the list as the most widespread offense.

Do you find it frustrating when people are glued to their phones in public? If so, prepare yourself for a stroll through Coventry. On the other hand, Hull, which ranks as the second rudest city in the UK based on our findings, may present a different challenge. Here, you’re more likely to encounter loud residents who ignore passersby and invade personal space compared to other cities we’ve explored.

This list shows which cities ranked the highest for each rude behavior in our survey:

  • Being absorbed by phone in public: Coventry
  • Not letting people merge in public: Leicester
  • Cars not slowing down around pedestrians: Bristol
  • Being noisy in public: Hull
  • Not acknowledging strangers: Hull
  • Watching videos in public: Coventry
  • Talking on speaker in public: Hull
  • Closed off body language: Bristol
  • Not respecting personal space: Hull
  • Being rude to service staff: Coventry
  • Not tipping: Bristol
  • Jumping queues: Bristol

Who shows the most rudeness: locals or non-locals?

We also inquired whether respondents believed that “locals”—those born and raised in their cities—were ruder than non-locals, or if both groups exhibited similar levels of impoliteness.

In a recent survey conducted across various cities, opinions on the courtesy of locals versus non-locals revealed some interesting insights: 20.8% of respondents felt that non-locals were ruder than locals, while 17.41% believed the opposite, asserting that locals were more discourteous. Meanwhile, a significant 40.47% found the behavior of both groups to be comparable, and 21.29% admitted they were unsure.

Our findings reveal that only five cities—Leicester, Hull, Coventry, London, and Nottingham—are home to locals perceived as ruder. This suggests that the residents of these urban centers may have developed a higher tolerance for specific behaviors, likely influenced by the unique cultural dynamics of each city.

Conversely, the five cities where outsiders tend to be perceived as more impolite are Edinburgh, Belfast, Liverpool, Newcastle, and Southampton. These vibrant, rapidly growing cities host large universities, attracting many newcomers who may not have grown up there. As a result, these residents might be less familiar with the local customs and etiquette that define public interactions.

The strong local identity in these urban centers often leads current residents to perceive newcomers as rude, rather than simply unfamiliar with the community’s unique culture. This perspective highlights the challenges of adapting to a new environment.

Below is the complete list of cities with ruder non-locals, ranked from the rudest to least rude:

  • Southampton
  • Newcastle
  • Liverpool
  • Belfast
  • Edinburgh
  • Sheffield
  • Glasgow
  • Manchester
  • Leeds
  • Cardiff
  • Birmingham
  • Bradford

Liverpool has claimed the title of the most generous city, making it an ideal destination for those in the hospitality industry. If you’re considering a career in this field, why not explore opportunities in the vibrant home of the Beatles? However, if you find yourself waiting tables in Leicester, don’t anticipate the same level of financial appreciation.

Conclusion

Our study revealed varying levels of rudeness among different cities, but it’s essential to highlight that, on the whole, the British exhibit a commendable level of politeness in public settings. With an average rudeness score of 5.40 on a scale of one to ten—where ten represents the rudest behavior—the highest score recorded was 5.84, while the lowest was 4.90. This suggests that good manners remain a valued aspect of life throughout the UK.
