Survey Reveals Concerns Over Free Speech Threats

Elon Musk, the world’s wealthiest individual, has set his sights on acquiring Twitter. Recently, he has openly expressed his vision for the platform: to champion free speech by easing content restrictions, reducing moderation, and making the company’s algorithm transparent. His aim is to transform Twitter into a vibrant marketplace for diverse ideas and open dialogue.

As we guide our students in learning languages online, we aspire for them to express themselves freely in democratic societies. However, the landscape of free speech has evolved with the advent of digital technology, raising questions about whether a hands-off approach is truly what people desire.

To understand Americans’ perceptions of free speech on social media and the moderation of language on Twitter, we conducted a survey involving 2,014 participants from across the United States. Here’s what their insights revealed.

Hostile takeover? 

In our recent survey, a striking 66% of respondents expressed their disapproval of Elon Musk potentially taking over Twitter. Among younger users, particularly Gen Z, the opposition was even stronger, with 77% firmly against the idea of Musk leading the platform.

The debate surrounding Musk’s takeover reveals a significant partisan divide. A striking 85% of Republicans expressed support for the move, in stark contrast to only 24% of Democrats who opposed it. This highlights the differing perspectives between the two parties regarding Musk’s influence and leadership.

Republicans feel targeted on social media 

Republicans seem to be advocating for change, particularly regarding free speech in America. A significant 84% of Republicans believe Twitter is contributing to the nation’s free speech issues, and 81% feel that Elon Musk has the potential to rectify this situation. In contrast, Democrats are less likely to share these concerns.

Republican backing for Musk’s acquisition of Twitter could be linked to concerns over perceived bias in social media moderation. In fact, Republicans reported feeling unfairly targeted, with 37% claiming their posts were removed compared to just 19% of Democrats. This disparity highlights a significant perception of inequity in how content is moderated across platforms.

Despite disagreement on moderation, there may be common ground 

In our recent survey, a significant number of respondents, 87%, expressed support for social media companies to take action against harmful content, such as threats of violence, while 77% felt the same about hate speech. However, opinions diverged along party lines: only 43% of Republicans believe that hate speech should be censored on these platforms, indicating a more cautious approach to content moderation among conservative respondents.

While opinions on content moderation strategies on social media platforms like Twitter vary widely along partisan lines, a significant majority of those surveyed expressed enthusiasm for a proposed “edit button.” Specifically, 67% of Democrats and an impressive 79% of Republicans were in favor of this feature, highlighting a rare point of agreement across the political spectrum.

This tool, which Musk recently surveyed Twitter users about, would enable individuals to edit their existing posts, allowing them to modify or remove content to comply with Twitter’s community guidelines. This feature could serve as a compromise, addressing Democrats’ push for moderation while accommodating Republicans’ demand for greater freedom of expression.

Methodology: To gauge Americans’ perspectives on free speech in the realm of social media, we conducted a survey on April 21, 2022, involving 2,014 participants. Our diverse sample included 54% female, 44% male, and 2% non-binary respondents, with ages spanning from 19 to 85, and an average age of 38. Politically, the group comprised 52% Democrats, 23% independents, 16% Republicans, and 10% identifying as “other.”
