We’ve uncovered a fascinating trend among MLB enthusiasts, revealing everything from common misspellings to mangled baseball jargon across online communities. By examining 30 subreddits dedicated to each of the 30 MLB teams, we ranked them according to how often misspellings appear in posts and comments.

The Los Angeles Dodgers have earned the title for the worst spelling fans in baseball, frequently misspelling words like “their” and “interest.” Following closely in second place are the Toronto Blue Jays, whose fans also struggle with similar spelling mishaps.

For many sports enthusiasts, spelling their team’s name can pose a challenge. In fact, “Guardians” tops the list of commonly misspelled words among fans of the Cleveland Guardians on Reddit. On the other hand, Boston Red Sox supporters often struggle with longer, multi-syllable terms. Words like “delusional,” “successful,” “competitive,” “disappointed,” and “embarrassing” frequently trip them up.

Baseball, much like any other sport, has its own unique terminology that describes the action on the field. However, many fans often struggle with the correct spelling of these specialized terms.

We explored both terms to identify the teams with the most dedicated old-school fans. The results revealed that the Colorado Rockies, Cleveland Guardians, and Toronto Blue Jays top the list, showcasing their strong legacy and loyal supporter base.

Which fans misspell “smarty pants” words?

It’s not just outdated terminology that can baffle fans; misspelled words used in an attempt to sound intelligent can also create confusion. When fans try to impress others with their vocabulary but get it wrong, it can lead to misunderstandings.

We discovered that baseball fans often stumble over two frequently misspelled terms: “bonafide” and “moreso.” The correct forms are actually two separate words: “bona fide” and “more so.” The use of these terms in conversations caught our attention, while their misspellings confirmed their place on our list of “smarty pants” fans.

Analyzing the misspellings of two specific words across various teams, we discovered the most intellectually playful fan bases. The Baltimore Orioles, Texas Rangers, and San Diego Padres stood out, as their fans were the most likely to use these words—albeit with a few typos—earning them the title of the most clever fans.

Methodology: 

In February 2023, we conducted a comprehensive analysis of over 30,000 “Hot” posts and 740,000 comments from 30 subreddits focused on Major League Baseball teams. Utilizing advanced machine learning techniques, we identified the frequency of misspellings within each subreddit. This data allowed us to calculate a misspelling ratio (misspellings per comment) and generate our rankings based on these findings.

Our machine learning tool flagged many instances that we did not count as misspellings, including:

– Common internet acronyms (e.g. lol, imo, lmao, wtf)

– Words spelled in a stylized or slang fashion (e.g. gunna, welp)

– Proper nouns (e.g. Correa, Scherzer)

– Nicknames (e.g. Dbacks, MadBum)

– Profanity

We also identified numerous misspellings, such as “atleast,” which appear to stem from typographical errors rather than a lack of literacy. As a result, we chose not to include these in our tally.

Many of the flagged misspellings fell into a gray area where casual usage differs from formal grammar rules. For instance, people often write “everytime” instead of “every time,” or “longterm” instead of “long-term.” We chose not to penalize users for these variations.
