Boston emerged as the leader in education, boasting the highest student-to-teacher ratio, the most substantial city spending per student, and impressive fourth-grade reading scores according to the Nation’s Report Card.

2. Providence, RI

The best work-life balance goes to Providence, which scored best for average hours worked per week.

3. New York City, NY

New York City boasts an impressive 45 high schools ranked among the best in the nation, outshining the competition significantly. In comparison, Los Angeles, which holds the second spot, has only 15 top-tier schools. This highlights NYC’s exceptional educational offerings.

4. Seattle, WA

The Emerald City has one of the highest average salaries, $66,112, and some of the best state retirement benefits.

5. Nashville, TN

Music City boasts the top retirement benefits in the state and proudly leads the nation with an impressive graduation rate of 97.5%.

Providence, RI has teachers who work fewer hours

Teachers are notorious for their long hours, frequently arriving early and staying late to ensure their students succeed. On average, educators dedicate over 40 hours a week to their profession. However, The Renaissance City stands out as a beacon of hope, providing teachers with the best opportunity for achieving a healthier work-life balance.

Providence leads the nation with an impressive average of 47.6 hours worked per week, surpassing the national average of 40.2 hours. However, it still falls short compared to other states, all of which exceed 50 hours per week. On a brighter note, Providence ranks among the top five cities for salaries, boasting an attractive average income of $63,780.

New York City, NY has the best high schools.

New York City, often referred to as the Big Apple, presents an enticing opportunity for teachers, boasting an impressive average salary of $65,971—making it the highest among the top five cities in the United States. However, it’s important to note that the city ranks last in terms of affordability, raising concerns about how far that salary will stretch in such an expensive environment. While the financial rewards are significant, teachers must weigh them against the high cost of living when considering their career in this vibrant metropolis.

New York City offers numerous advantages for both teachers and students, boasting an impressive 45 high schools among the nation’s top 300—more than any other city on our list. Furthermore, the city demonstrates its commitment to education by investing significantly in its schools, with a remarkable per-student spending of $26,236, ranking it second in the country.

New York City offers an abundance of continuing education programs across its schools, making it an ideal place for enhancing skills and advancing careers. These opportunities not only foster job stability but also promote professional growth.

New York City is a vibrant hub for language learners, particularly those studying Spanish, thanks to its incredible diversity. A remarkable 49.1% of New Yorkers communicate in a language other than English, with Spanish speakers making up half of that population. This multicultural environment makes NYC an ideal location for adults seeking to take Spanish classes and immerse themselves in the language.

Seattle, WA offers a higher average salary.

Don’t let a bit of rain deter you from exploring the vibrant Emerald City! Seattle boasts the second-highest average salary in the nation at an impressive $66,112 and offers a cost of living that’s slightly more affordable than that of New York City. Additionally, Seattle ranks fifth for state retirement benefits and boasts an impressive 94.5% high school graduation rate.

Music City is an ideal destination for educators. Nashville boasts the best state retirement benefits nationwide, sharing the honor with Memphis. Additionally, it proudly holds the highest high school graduation rate in the United States at an impressive 97.5%, also tied with Memphis.

Nashville stands out as a prime location for educators, boasting an impressive 97.9% retention rate for teachers with three or more years of experience. This makes it the third-best city in the nation for teacher longevity, highlighting its appeal and supportive environment for experienced educators.

Small cities with big rewards

Teachers seeking a more relaxed lifestyle will find these mid-sized cities, each with populations under 500,000, to be standout options according to our research.

1. Providence, RI

It’s no wonder that the second-best city overall also shines as the top smaller city. Providence offers all the perks of a vibrant urban lifestyle, but with a more relaxed atmosphere, making it an ideal choice for those who seek charm and convenience without the hustle and bustle of larger metropolises.

Among these smaller cities, Providence stood out with the second-highest number of schools offering continuing education programs and ranked second in terms of state retirement benefits.

2. St. Paul, MN

Pig’s Eye stands out as one of the top cities for educators, offering an impressive expense deduction of $500—the highest available in the entire state.

St. Paul stands out for its safety, recording the fewest school shootings per 100,000 students among cities of similar size, which bodes well for both teachers and students. Additionally, it boasts one of the highest numbers of schools offering continuing education programs among mid-sized cities, reflecting a strong commitment to lifelong learning.

3. Minneapolis, MN

Minneapolis is another excellent choice for educators looking for something similar to St. Paul but with some key differences.

Minneapolis boasts a generous educator expense deduction of $500 while investing significantly in its students, with an impressive expenditure of $19,584 per pupil—among the highest in the region. The city shares the distinction of having the lowest school shooting rate alongside St. Paul, recording only 0.38 incidents per 100,000 students. 4. Pittsburgh, PA

Additionally, we consider job stability and the degree of connection between schools and their surrounding communities.

Ranking Factors

The following data was collected for the 75 most populated cities:

Income and Living

Average Salary: This figure represents the calculated average salary for all teaching positions listed on Indeed in the specified city as of April 15, 2024. A higher ranking or score signifies elevated salary levels.

State retirement benefits are evaluated based on quality, with scores reflecting their effectiveness. According to data from Equable.org, states are ranked on a percentage scale, where a higher score indicates benefit plans that are closer to achieving the ideal of 100%.

Average Weekly Hours Worked: This information is derived from data gathered by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), which tracks recorded hours worked. A higher ranking or score signifies a lower average of hours worked each week.

Cost of Living Index Explained: This scale measures the average cost of goods across U.S. cities, with a baseline index of 100. Cities scoring below 100 have a lower cost of living, while those above 100 are more expensive. In this system, a higher score reflects a more affordable lifestyle.

Student Performance

High school graduation rate: This statistic reflects the percentage of freshman students in each city who successfully complete their high school education. A higher ranking signifies better graduation rates, highlighting cities where students are more likely to earn their diplomas.
