America’s Most Rude Cities Revealed in New Study

Frequent travelers often encounter cultural mismatches, which can be quite common. Even within the same country, cities can vary significantly in their local traditions, behaviors, mannerisms, and expressions. These differences can greatly influence our perceptions of a place, making each travel experience unique.

At LingualNeeds, a dynamic platform offering private English lessons and online Spanish classes, we conducted a survey of over 1,500 residents from the 30 largest metropolitan areas in the U.S. Our goal was to gauge the perceived rudeness levels in their cities, highlighting common rude behaviors to help travelers set their expectations when visiting. Additionally, respondents shared insights on cultural differences they’ve encountered while abroad.

The rudest U.S. cities, according to residents

Residents have spoken, and the verdict is in: Philadelphia, Memphis, and New York City rank as the three rudest cities in the United States. In a recent survey, we asked locals to evaluate the rudeness of their fellow citizens on a scale from one to ten. While the national average rudeness score sits at 5.10, these cities stood out with scores of 6.43 for Philadelphia, 6.05 for Memphis, and 6.00 for New York City.

If you know a bit about American culture, this might not surprise you. Often referred to as the “City of Brotherly Love,” Philadelphia is frequently perceived as having a rude disposition. However, locals explain this behavior as a result of a strong sense of insularity. Many residents, accustomed to the hustle and bustle of city life, have developed a tendency to keep to themselves, making them hesitant to engage with outsiders.

What often comes across as rudeness in larger cities can be misleading. We tend to label behaviors as rude when they seem confrontational or inconsiderate. However, in bustling metropolitan areas, where we encounter countless individuals each day, what might initially seem like insensitivity could actually be a necessary strategy for self-preservation.

A significant number of Americans perceive city residents as less polite compared to their rural counterparts. In fact, a striking 70% of survey participants agreed that “people who live in or around cities are ruder than those in rural areas.” This highlights a common stereotype about urban living versus country life.

The most polite U.S. cities, according to residents

Several cities demonstrated a low level of rudeness, reflecting a culture rooted in politeness. Notably, the top contenders for the most courteous cities are Austin, TX (3.91), San Diego, CA (4.17), and Fort Worth, TX (4.20). Interestingly, these polite cities are primarily found in the southern, midwestern, and western regions of the United States, while the Northeast appears to be underrepresented in this category.

Our findings suggest that residents of Austin truly appreciate the city’s relaxed and welcoming vibe, even amid its rapid growth. Texas, known for its reputation for politeness and friendliness, shares this Southern charm that embodies the essence of Southern hospitality. It’s no surprise, then, that five of the most courteous cities in the U.S. are found right here in the Lone Star State.

The most common rude behaviors in the U.S.

Rudeness varies significantly by region, so we set out to discover the most frequently observed rude behaviors in different cities. Our findings reveal that, across the U.S., two key themes dominate: troublesome driving and a lack of respect for shared spaces.

One of the most noticeable rude behaviors in the U.S. is the tendency for people to be glued to their phones in public spaces, a phenomenon that’s particularly prevalent in bustling New York City. In Memphis, watch out for the chaotic traffic, as merging can be a challenge, and expect locals to be quite vocal in public settings. Meanwhile, in Boston, you’ll find that cars often don’t yield to pedestrians, and residents tend to overlook strangers, creating a somewhat disconnected atmosphere.

Who shows the most rudeness: locals or non-locals?

We then invited participants to share their experiences by ranking the rudeness of two groups: the locals, or those born and raised in their city, versus non-locals who have relocated later in life. Surprisingly, a majority of 55% identified non-locals as ruder than locals, though perceptions of rudeness varied significantly from one city to another.

Cities known for having less courteous locals include Philadelphia, Boston, Memphis, Detroit, and New York City. This suggests that the residents, shaped by their hometown culture, have developed behaviors that reflect the unique social dynamics of these urban environments.

As these cities rapidly expand, many residents are newcomers who weren’t born there. Interestingly, locals often perceive these newcomers as rude, rather than attributing this behavior to the city’s culture itself.

The rudest behaviors when traveling abroad

When exploring the dynamics of public behavior across U.S. cities, it’s evident that each locale has its own unique social norms. However, the situation becomes more complex on an international scale. Americans often exhibit a sense of comfort with rudeness in their hometowns, but this tendency can unintentionally carry over when they travel abroad, even if that’s not their intention.

A striking 76% of respondents agreed with the idea that Americans often come across as rude while traveling abroad, even if they don’t mean to. To shed light on this issue, we created a list of behaviors deemed “rude” in other countries and asked participants to rate how likely they would be to engage in these actions while traveling.

The following are common behaviors Americans exhibit when traveling abroad that are considered rude in some countries: 

1. Tipping is not customary in countries like Japan and China, where service workers receive adequate wages. Offering extra cash may be viewed as offensive.
2. Having your hands in your pockets
3. Utilizing hand gestures like thumbs up, crossed fingers, bull horns, palm displays, or beckoning can enhance communication.
4. Altering or not finishing a meal
5. Leaving shoes on indoors

Conclusion

Cultural differences often create awkward situations, but you can navigate these challenges by familiarizing yourself with the behaviors and norms of other cultures. Whether you’re meeting someone new or preparing for a trip, understanding these nuances goes beyond just language skills. You’ll gain insights that enrich your interactions and experiences.

Methodology: Between June 15 and June 20, 2022, we conducted a survey of 1,577 residents from the 30 largest cities in the United States. To qualify, participants needed to have lived in their city for at least one year. Among the respondents, 47% identified as male, 50% as female, and 3% as nonbinary or chose not to disclose their gender.

To identify the cities with the most and least rude residents, we conducted a survey where participants rated the rudeness of their city’s average resident on a scale from one to ten—one being very polite and ten being extremely rude. By analyzing these ratings, we calculated an average “rudeness score” for each city. Those with scores above the average were deemed the most polite, while those below were classified as the rudest.
