Music has a unique power to stir our emotions, whether it’s igniting feelings of anger, love, sadness, or joy. With its captivating beats, vibrant energy, and poignant lyrics, a song can perfectly express what we struggle to articulate, creating a deep connection when words fall short.
At LingualNeeds, a platform dedicated to teaching English, French, and Spanish, we set out to explore the powerful influence of music on emotions. To do this, we conducted a comprehensive language analysis study, compiling a diverse list of musicians ranging from legendary icons to today’s chart-toppers. Utilizing the Emotion dataset, we sifted through discussions in various subreddit fan forums, identifying and quantifying emotive words and phrases to uncover the emotional themes that resonate with listeners.
In this post, we explore the range of emotions identified through our language analysis, including love, anger, sadness, and happiness. We also highlight the artist who excels at weaving words that resonate deeply with our feelings.
Ed Sheeran and U2 have the happiest fans
Expressing happiness can often be a challenge; words may fail to capture the emotions tied to cherished memories, reunions with a loved one, or the simple joy of a summer day. Fortunately, many talented musicians have skillfully conveyed these feelings through their poignant lyrics and captivating melodies.

Artists such as Ed Sheeran and U2 bring immense joy to their fans with their lively melodies. By incorporating metaphors that evoke joyful and carefree experiences, their songs resonate deeply, making them especially relatable and uplifting.
Groups delivering powerful rock-infused messages, such as Led Zeppelin (#26) and Twenty One Pilots (#39), find themselves positioned in the middle of our rankings. Conversely, artists like Cardi B (#1) and Megan Thee Stallion (#2), who tend to evoke less joy, are at the top of the list for expressing anger.

Expressing yourself like a “Sad Clown” with Panic! At the Disco
Some artists have a remarkable ability to evoke deep emotions in their listeners, often stirring feelings of regret, melancholy, or profound sadness through their music.
At the forefront of evoking deep emotions in fans is Panic! At the Disco, ranking #1. Their music may have an upbeat and lively sound, but the lyrics delve into poignant themes that resonate with many, capturing the bittersweet nature of life’s transitions and the sadness that often accompanies the end of a chapter.

Artists often draw from their personal experiences, which can amplify the emotional depth of their music, creating a profound connection with their fans. Take Linkin Park’s lead vocalist, Chester Bennington, for instance. His lyrics were deeply influenced by his own battles with mental health, allowing listeners who face similar struggles to find solace and understanding in his work. This shared experience of pain can make the music even more impactful and relatable.
Much like Linkin Park, Britney Spears (#5) transcends her pop music label with songs that resonate deeply with listeners. Having lived much of her life in the public eye, her lyrics often evoke powerful emotions, allowing fans to connect their personal experiences with her music.
An artist’s distinctive voice can amplify the emotion in their music. In Halsey’s song “cursive,” her high, almost haunting vocals evoke a deep sense of sorrow among her listeners, drawing them further into the emotional landscape of the track.
Conversely, artists such as Dua Lipa (#1), Pink (#2), and Camila Cabello (#3) evoke the least feelings of sadness among their fans, sparking more uplifting reactions.
Articulating your anger with Cardi B
Trailblazing female artists Cardi B (#1) and Megan Thee Stallion (#2) are redefining the rap landscape by channeling anger into their powerful performances. They articulate a fresh perspective on women’s roles, challenging traditional norms both in the boardroom and the bedroom, and making their voices heard in a male-dominated industry.
Katy Perry (#1), Selena Gomez (#2), and Ariana Grande (#3) are the leading artists known for infusing their music with bold, spirited lyrics. Interestingly, despite their feisty wordplay, they evoke the least anger among listeners.

While rock music often evokes feelings of anger, only two bands have managed to secure spots in the top 10: Guns N’ Roses at #6 and Metallica at #7.

Tell Me You Love Me – Demi Lovato
Regardless of the language you speak, expressing the phrase “I love you” can often be daunting, and articulating its depth even more so. Fortunately, many artists craft lyrics that beautifully capture the complexities of love, allowing us to explore and communicate our feelings from diverse viewpoints.
Our findings reveal that women excel at expressing love through music more than men do. In fact, the top 10 artists who evoke the strongest feelings of love among their fans are all female. Leading the pack are Demi Lovato at #1, Katy Perry at #2, and Dua Lipa at #3.
Male musicians, on the other hand, populate the top ten artists that don’t make fans feel love.

Methodology:
In March 2023, we conducted an extensive analysis of over 200,000 trending posts and comments from Reddit communities dedicated to 92 popular music artists and bands.
Over the past 40 years, we’ve compiled a diverse list of artists, evaluating them based on record sales, awards, critical acclaim, and the vibrancy of their subreddit communities. This comprehensive catalog showcases the evolution of popular music, highlighting both legendary icons like Metallica and Michael Jackson, as well as contemporary stars such as Charlie XCX and Bad Bunny. Our selection not only celebrates musical milestones but also spotlights emerging talent in the industry.
We conducted a detailed analysis of 150 to 200 posts for each artist on their subreddit, which collectively garnered between 300 and 4,000 comments. On average, our examination encompassed 175 posts and approximately 2,200 comments per artist, providing a rich insight into fan interactions and discussions.
To analyze the emotional landscape of online interactions, we treated each post and comment as a standalone “statement” and utilized a dataset known as Emotion, which quantifies the sentiment in language. Each statement received scores based on six key emotions: sadness, joy, love, anger, fear, and surprise. We then tagged each statement with the emotion it ranked highest for. For instance, to identify the saddest fan community, we determined which subreddit had the highest percentage of statements labeled as “sad.”
