Juggling exams, demanding coursework, and various responsibilities makes college life a significant challenge. Coupled with some institutions reducing their acceptance rates post-pandemic, it’s easy to see why students are feeling the weight of high expectations.

To gain insight into the emotions of college students, we turned to the platform where they most openly share their thoughts: Twitter.

We analyzed tweets from students in 150 cities, focusing on those shared during the first three months of the fall semester, from August 1st to October 1st. Using the machine learning tool TensiStrength, we assessed the stress levels reflected in these tweets.

Next, we focused on cities that host one or more major universities, specifically those where the combined number of graduate and undergraduate students constitutes at least 30% of the city’s total population.

• Two Ivy League colleges rank among the top 10 most stressed college towns: Harvard University at #2 and Cornell University at #10.

The most stressful college towns ranked

The 2021 Real College Survey revealed that nearly 60% of students faced basic needs insecurity, grappling with concerns about food and housing. This added strain often turns their college towns into additional sources of stress, impacting their overall college experience.

Berkeley, California, tops the list as the most stressed-out college town, and it’s easy to see why. With a cost of living that soars 82% above the national average, meeting basic needs can be a significant challenge for students, contributing to their stress levels.

Not all college towns in our top 10 come with a hefty price tag. Take Berkeley, our top choice, for instance. In contrast, Iowa City, IA—ranked third—boasts a cost of living that’s just 7% above the national average, making it an affordable option for students and residents alike.

Universities & colleges in the most stressed college towns

From bustling, high-pressure cities to serene Midwestern communities, various college towns and their affiliated universities have shared a mix of anxiety-driven tweets.

Two Ivy League institutions ranked among the top 10 most stressed college towns, with Harvard University taking the second spot and Cornell University coming in at tenth. Although these prestigious schools are often associated with high levels of stress, they are not alone; many other college towns also grapple with significant stress levels.

Berkeley, CA, hosts one of the nine campuses of the University of California system, known for its rigorous academic environment. However, UC Berkeley has gained a reputation for its intense “workaholic” culture, evidenced by a striking 43% of tweets from the area expressing stress-related sentiments.

Cambridge, MA, secured the second spot in our rankings, with a notable 35% of tweets expressing stress-related sentiments. This bustling city hosts prestigious institutions like Harvard and MIT, both renowned for their demanding and high-pressure atmospheres.

Several other college towns also made the list, including East Lansing, MI, the vibrant home of Michigan State University, and Notre Dame, IN, where students thrive at The University of Notre Dame. Notably, these universities reported high levels of stress, with 30.9% of tweets from East Lansing and 29.2% from Notre Dame expressing feelings of anxiety.

Coastal college towns also contributed their share of high-stress tweets. Stanford, California, home to Stanford University, reported that 30.3% of tweets reflected stress levels, while Ithaca, New York, the home of Cornell University, showed a slightly lower rate of 29.1%.

College towns playing it cool: the least stressed college towns

Here, just 14.95% of tweets reflect stress, making it the ultimate destination for students looking to enjoy a more tranquil academic life.

College stress is a longstanding issue that has plagued students for generations. Academic pressures consistently rank as the primary source of stress for college students, a trend that has persisted throughout the history of higher education.

Stress levels among college students are on the rise, and the statistics are alarming. A study conducted by UC Berkeley, recognized as the most stressed university in the nation, revealed that anxiety levels among students doubled between 2008 and 2016. Researchers attribute this surge to increasing financial pressures and the growing amount of time students spend on digital devices.

In its 2021 National College Health Assessment, the American College Health Association found that:
