This sparked our curiosity to explore which U.S. cities are home to the most disappointing restaurants and how customers articulate their displeasure.

To uncover the truth about restaurant pricing, we analyzed a staggering 57,245 Google reviews from more than 10,000 restaurants in the 50 largest U.S. cities. By examining the language used by reviewers, we pinpointed both the most overpriced and fairly priced dining establishments across the country.

To uncover which cities boast the most overpriced restaurants in the country, we scrutinized thousands of Google reviews from the top 50 cities. Our focus was on identifying keywords linked to high prices, including terms like “overpriced,” “pricey,” “expensive,” and “rip-off.” By analyzing the frequency of these keywords in reviews, we revealed the cities where diners are paying a premium for subpar food and service.

Oakland, San Jose, and Virginia Beach top the list of cities with the most overpriced restaurants. Notably, three out of the top five cities are in California, underscoring the state’s high restaurant prices, which reflect its overall soaring cost of living. Californians often prioritize high-quality ingredients, contributing to these elevated prices. Consequently, residents are accustomed to spending more on dining out, and with a wealth of culinary options, they can discern the value of what they’re paying for.

In contrast, larger cities known for their vibrant food scenes tend to price their menus fairly based on the value they offer. Notably, New York, Dallas, and Los Angeles receive the fewest complaints about overpriced meals among the 50 major U.S. cities. As a result, diners in these metropolitan areas are typically more satisfied with their dining experiences.

In sharing their frustrating experiences at some of the nation’s overpriced restaurants, reviewers often use similar expressions. Our analysis of these reviews reveals that the words “expensive,” “overpriced,” and “pricey” frequently appear, highlighting a common sentiment among dissatisfied customers.

Restaurants with the most overpriced food complaints

Restaurants take various factors into account when setting their menu prices, including the cost of ingredients, labor, overhead, and market trends. However, not all establishments strike the right balance. Some set their prices too high, failing to match the quality and quantity of food they provide. While certain cities are notorious for steep menu prices, we also identified specific restaurants nationwide that frequently attract complaints about their overpriced offerings.

Leading the pack are Horn Barbecue in Oakland, Ocean 27 in Virginia Beach, and Docks on the Harbor in Baltimore. Although barbecue restaurants often charge more due to meat costs, some reviewers, like Beto Salgado, feel that Horn’s prices fall short of value, stating, “A bit overpriced, had better for less $.”

In his review of Ocean 27, Jim Powers doesn’t hold back, calling the prices “a crime.” He argues that the drinks and food are excessively overpriced, likening the experience to “borderline highway robbery.” He humorously suggests that the staff should don ski masks to match the steep charges. The perception of whether a restaurant is overpriced varies greatly from person to person. Take Kemuri Tatsu-Ya, a trendy Japanese spot in Austin that many deem expensive. In contrast, for residents of Tucson, even a meal at McDonald’s might feel like a splurge. This illustrates how individual experiences and local contexts shape our views on dining costs.

Here are some popular dining establishments that stand out in their respective cities: Five Guys delights burger lovers in Arlington, while Ruth’s Chris Steak House serves up fine steaks in El Paso. In Fort Worth, Lupe Tortilla is a go-to for Mexican cuisine, and Benihana offers a unique dining experience in Houston. Indianapolis boasts the Hibachi Grill & Supreme Buffet, and Shake Shack satisfies cravings in Kansas City. Jacksonville’s Sugar Factory is a sweet spot for dessert enthusiasts, and Peter Piper Pizza is a family favorite in Mesa.

The restaurants that stand out for their excellent value, based on customer reviews, are Tasty Pizza in Omaha, MOMO Sushi in Minneapolis, and Red Mountain Cafe in Mesa. Patrons consistently highlight the importance of attentive service, high-quality ingredients, and reasonable prices as key factors in their positive dining experiences.

Following his visit to Tasty Pizza, reviewer Thomas Connole enthusiastically declared, “The staff is fantastic, the pizza is incredible, and the prices are unbeatable. Without a doubt, this is Omaha’s top pizza spot!” Meanwhile, Noah Raisanen shared his thoughts after dining at MOMO Sushi, stating, “The sushi is exceptional, the service is excellent, and the prices are just right.”

At Red Mountain Cafe, diners can expect a consistently pleasant experience. As Boni Ludin highlights, “The food is always delicious, the service is friendly, and the prices are budget-friendly,” after her visit to this Arizona gem.

Reviewers commonly used terms such as “affordable,” “reasonably priced,” and “great prices” to describe these value-driven dining experiences.

These gems can be charming mom-and-pop establishments or beloved local chains. To uncover these fantastic finds, we researched the most reasonably priced restaurants in every major U.S. city.

In the vibrant city of Boston, Dirty Water Dough Company stands out on one of the busiest streets, delighting customers with its delicious pizza. Caroline Luis raves, “The thin, snappy crust makes this the best affordable meal you’ll find on Newbury St.” Meanwhile, in Dallas, Alberto Cortes highlights the unique charm of Dunston’s Steak House, stating, “With great food at great prices, it’s a rare gem these days—no wonder it has withstood the test of time.” Over in Houston, Tia Maria’s exceeds Ernest S. Sanchez’s expectations for a Mexican restaurant, as he notes, “You get fantastic value, generous portions, and excellent service. Plus, the chips are spot on. What more could you want?”

Language analysis methodology

In August 2024, we analyzed the language of 57,245 reviews from more than 10,000 restaurants in the 50 largest cities in the U.S. Our aim was to uncover which restaurants are considered overpriced and which ones offer fair pricing.

To identify restaurants that are overpriced, we analyzed reviews featuring negative pricing keywords like “overpriced,” “pricey,” “expensive,” “rip-off,” “costly,” “not worth the money,” “inflated prices,” and “high prices.” Conversely, to find restaurants that offer fair pricing, we looked for positive keywords such as “good value,” “great value,” “great prices,” “fair prices,” “well-priced,” “budget-friendly,” “reasonably priced,” “affordable,” “good deal,” and “worth every dollar” or “worth every penny.” This approach allowed us to differentiate between those that deliver value and those that don’t.

To achieve precise contextual analysis, we utilized natural language processing (NLP) to evaluate the sentiment of each review. In the overpriced category, we filtered out 3-star reviews with a sentiment score of 0.4 or higher, as well as 4- and 5-star reviews scoring -0.55 or above. Conversely, for the fairly priced category, we eliminated any reviews with fewer than 3 stars and sentiment scores below -0.55.

To determine our rankings, we calculated the ratio of relevant positive or negative reviews—based on the specific category—to the total number of reviews for each restaurant. This approach helps us objectively assess each restaurant’s performance.
